Musicians labor over études.
Dancers return endlessly to the barre.
Actors put themselves through class after class.
Artistic disciplines require practice to develop -- and maintain -- technique.
Why should playwriting be any different?
Picture
Here's how it works
Busy playwrights are given a prompt designed to technically challenge them.
They have one week to submit their work.
Mere days later, a few of Parley's favorite actors read the scenes "cold" during a live-streamed YouTube broadcast.
Plays don't work until playwrights do.

*The Bacchic Rites are an immersive dramaturgical experience culminating in a Movement performance by the cast inspired by ritual elements explored in the play. All elements of audience participation are limited to individuals who consent. "Consent cards" will be given to each audience member to display or revoke their consent at any time, no questions asked.
In a tunnel beneath the Soledad Mission in California, a group of people are drinking wine with a special ingredient. They’re all in thrall to George, a charismatic leader with an uncanny ability to skirt death. Then a cowboy interrupts their secret ritual with questions – about cattle, real estate, orgies, even the Talking Heads. Inspired equally by The Bacchae, cults, and the Doomsday Clock, Cowboys With Questions examines the pleasures and costs of surviving in uncertain times.

West of Lenin
Who knew a play about a fractured society in post-World War, post-pandemic London would feel so timely in 2022?

An adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s 1925 novel, Clarissa Buys the Flowers Herself tells the story of one day in the life of a woman as she prepares to host a party. Clarissa Dalloway recalls memories of her life as an adventurous, free-spirited young woman. Thirty years later, the 1918 pandemic  has taken an enormous toll on her both physically and mentally. Meanwhile, Septimus Warren Smith, a shell-shocked veteran, is constantly haunted by flashbacks of World War I.

APOSIOPESIS:  An abrupt halt in the middle of ...  As if one is unable or hesitant to ...
Forward momentum has been interrupted. Something is withheld, suspended, waiting ...
At times, it feels as though we are living between the dots of an ellipsis.
Five Seattle playwrights have taken these confines as an invitation to pry open new doors in their imaginations -- not only to see what emerges, but to devise a way to share it with an audience in these uncertain times.  Parley Productions invites you to don a mask and join us for an unusual tour of the second floor of the University Heights Center, where these imaginings have taken up temporary residence.
All faces will be obscured.  No words will be uttered.  What sort of play is that? Come see …

Written by Greg Brisendine
Directed by Rebecca Tourino Collinsworth
Technical wizardry by Jaime Shure
With Gretchen Douma, Azana Nunez, Janet Hietter, Kelly Johnson, Buddy Todd, Ellen Dessler Smith, C. Sebastian Grace
September 18, 2021
It’s a typical pre-dawn morning at the Heart’s Desire Laundromat. At 2 am, a small group of unassuming folks -- the ones less comfortable with the bustle of daylight -- are washing, drying, and folding. It’s quiet. But quiet doesn’t make for much of a play. Hoping to spice things up, a writer throws an abandoned baby into the mix. A baby is spicy, after all. How will Adrian, Jesse, Reese, Shawn, and Tristan contend with this unsettling development? And is it weird that you care? They’re just figments of a writer’s imagination, right?  Right?

“At the trial of G-d, we will ask: why did you allow all this?
And the answer will be an echo: why did you allow all this?”
-Ilya Kaminsky

The last two people on Earth have gotten themselves stuck in the bottom of a ditch. With little more than a stack of lightly used newspapers, Achat and Curtis must find a way to forge connection in a world that has forgotten them entirely. They will have to overcome prejudice, trauma, and despair in order to give one another that final missing piece of their own humanity, but they first face an even bigger obstacle: they fight like wet cats.
Only time will tell if they can bury their differences or if one of them will bury the other.

Written & directed by Rebecca Tourino Collinsworth
With Colleen Carey and Katherine Jett

January 28, 2019

Bring me my son or this storm will kill you all.
Cora, a midwife and herbalist, is in the wrong place at the wrong time.
In search of her long-lost son, Cora arrives in a Puritan settlement in 1652 during the most destructive storm in a century. When she's thrown in jail under suspicion of witchcraft, she demands to see her child--a man the settlers call the Monster of Connecticut. Instead, she meets Miranda, a Puritan on the verge of childbirth, sent in to extract a confession and save Cora's soul. But neither Cora nor Miranda is exactly what she seems. In lively conversation with The Tempest, cherubin takes on freedom, illusion, and agency through two of Shakespeare’s most under-explored characters.

Historical records offer us scant details concerning the life of Antinous, a boy famous for being the Roman Emperor Hadrian’s lover:
1)  He was from Bithynia, adopted by Hadrian while still a child.
2)  He went hunting with the Emperor once.
3)  He drowned in the Nile under mysterious circumstances.

Hadrian commissioned the making of hundreds upon hundreds of statues in honor of his beautiful, lost love.  But how did Antinous feel about his journey from Bithynia farm boy to imperial lover?
As his relationship with Hadrian begins to turn sexual, Antinous is named heir to the thrown, befriends a hot boxer, and finds himself hounded by a callous, three-voiced being who seems to control his fate.
Anton is the exploration of Antinous’s life, death, and legacy.

Most women in 17th century Venice had two options: marry or become a nun—and they didn’t get to choose.  For unwilling brides of Christ, a convent truly was a prison.  With no religious calling nor hope of seeing the outside world again, many took advantage of what pleasures they could, be they against the rules of their order or downright illegal.  Within the walls of one Venetian convent, seven nuns are coping with monastic enclosure in vastly different ways.  When they fall under investigation by the city’s magistrates, they face crises of faith and mortal danger as trespasses are revealed and actions are called to account.  Hidden history comes to light in a fictional story of female agency in a time when it was forbidden.

One location has haunted Nora since she was six: Her visits to the Iguazú Falls have come to symbolize everything she's gained and lost since she left her home country to be a geology professor in the States.  Engaged to an American-born academic, orphaned by her family and by language itself, Nora struggles to master lucid dreaming in order to navigate the turbulent waters of a recent trauma.  Now, with the help of a serpent parrot god, Nora must walk the blurry line between reality and dream, land and abyss, history and myth to find home again.

Paul, a sensitive, artistic boy, turns into Marita—the type of woman to wear a double strand of pearls. To their worried parents, it's a game, and a dangerous game at that. To them, it's more—a tantalizing chance to explore a new way of being in the world. But in the face of new sexual attraction and exposed family secrets, the rules of their role-play start to break down, and being Magpie and Marita is suddenly a lot more complicated. A coming-of-age love story featuring astronomy, cross-dressing, and power dynamics.

Marina is a solitary soul swimming in the circles of her routine life.  But when her ritual meal of catfish soup is disrupted by the disappearance of her fishermonger, she embarks on a quest for love and redemption that takes her all the way down to the darkest depths of the ocean floor.

Hearts
Written by Susan McNally
Directed by Rebecca Tourino Collinsworth

Hearts is the story of a strong but gentle soul, a woman who fiercely loves and protects her family. Yet the harder she tries to shelter them from harm, the louder the past reverberates and threatens to undo them all. Hearts is a story of love in all its facets: familial, romantic, and illicit, and how the heart can tolerate pain more than ambiguity.
